EBARA Engineer Wins ASME Henry R Worthington Medal

EBARA CORPORATION (“EBARA”) is pleased to announce that the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)*1 awarded Akira Goto, a technical superintendent*2 at EBARA, an ASME Henry R. Worthington Medal at the ASME-JSME-KSME Joint Fluids Engineering Conference (AJK Fluids) 2019 in San Francisco, USA on 30th July. In recognition of the years of Mr. Goto’s contribution to the development of pump technologies, he is the first Japanese recipient of this medal.

1. Background
Due to the progress of supercomputers that speeds up by ten times in every three to four years, a large-scale numerical analysis has been increasingly applied to the industrial use in recent years. However, because the design configuration of machinery, modelled for numerical analysis, still depends largely on design diagrams and empirical rules, an innovation in design technologies was being sought. Under these circumstances, EBARA led the development of three-dimensional design technologies for pumps, compressors and other turbo fluid machineries. Also, it was combined with numerical optimization to promote the innovation of fluid-dynamic design technologies. Not limited to the contribution in the academic field, it also leads to the technological development that supports society through the industrial sector.

2. Award Overview
The ASME Henry R. Worthington Medal was launched in 1980 to honor those who made outstanding achievements in pump machineries, systems, and concepts in the areas of research, development, design, innovation, management, education and publication.

- Achievements in the development of advanced numerical and experimental research approaches and their influence
- Unique contribution to the pump machinery design technologies through industry-academia collaboration
- Outstanding activities in the pump machinery industry

3. Future Developments
EBARA will continue innovation in both technologies for numerical analysis and design, and put our efforts on the development of innovative products beyond conventional design concepts. We will construct fundamental technologies in comprehensive technical areas through collaboration between industry, academia and government to support innovating pumps and other fluid machinery systems and reducing energy consumption.
