Pumps that support and maintain the huge aquariums at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

A special pump that circulates fresh seawater to support the lives of Okinawa's fish

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, located in the Ocean Expo Area of Okinawa Commemorative National Park, has an aquarium tank with a total water volume of approximately 10,000 m3. There are a total of 75 exhibit tanks, including the world's largest "Kuroshio Sea" large tank (tank capacity 7,500m3), where a wide variety of fish swim, including a whale shark with a total length of 8.8m and the Alfresilient manta ray, the world's largest type of ray, and the "Coral Sea" tank (tank capacity 300m3), which uses natural light and displays about 460 colonies of coral of 80 species.

A supply of fresh seawater is essential to recreate the sea around Okinawa in this tank. Furthermore, in environments where living organisms are handled, equipment malfunctions can be fatal, so high reliability is essential. To achieve this, more than 45 plastic centrifugal pumps of the FPS type are used for circulating seawater in the aquarium and for water distribution.

This plastic volute pump uses thermosetting resin and has excellent corrosion resistance, especially against liquids in which stainless steel is immersed, such as acid and seawater. In addition, since it is not reinforced with glass fiber, it can be incinerated, making it an environmentally friendly pump. In this way, Ebara pumps are playing an important role in daily life all over the world.
